turn to newt gingrich to try to save todd aiken in missouri and save the senate. howard fineman has the latest. >> it turns out he stacked the crowd with supporters. it's not the first time. >> i do love that music. i have to tell you. >> good to have you with us tonight. thanks for watching. mitt romney tried to create a distraction from his 47% comments. instead he gave himself more headaches. friday afternoon the romney campaign released the 2011 tax returns. the romneys paid 14.1% and would have paid an even lower rate if they took all of their deductions. the tax returns put the focus back on the issue of tax fairness in america. romney was asked about his tax rate during an interview with "60 minutes." >> is that fair to the guy who makes $50,000 and paid a higher rate than you did? >> it is a low rate. one of the reasons why the capital gains tax rate is lower is because capital has already been taxed once at the corporate level. as high as 35%. >> so you think it is fair? >> yeah, i think it's the right way to encourage economic growth to get people to invest, start business

as the republican primaries, the south carolina primary where romney lost by 15 points to newt gingrich. a big reason for that is that it was a lower income. it was working class and middle class republicans in south carolina flocked to gingrich and revolted against romney in that primary. it was gingrich they were calling him, you know, a vulture capitalist, that was a term used. they fullmented a backlash among romney in working class republicans. we're seeing evidence of that now. there was another poll out this week that looked at white working class voters talking about keys for obama. obama is doing quite well for working white class voters except in the deep south and appalachian, he's getting blown out there, but in places like ohio he's doing well there. romney is not someone you can really sell to thoez those voters very easily. >> we'll have to leave it there. steve kornacki, mudcat saunders, and i know mudcat is working on his campaign. we have to talk about that at sam point, mudcat. thank you for your time. >> we need to talk about taking that crook out and we can do it. aircraft

like newt gingrich who this week chastised the gop establhment for aandoning akin. >> if saying something dumb would disqualify you, joe biden wouldn't be vice president. >> reporter: national gop strategists say mccaskill who sees akin as beatable has intentionally withheld her attacks on akin until the deadline passes to drop out. she's limiting to touting her own moderate credentials. republican strategists who've written off missouri admit it has put gop chances for seizing the senate majority at major risk. take a look at the math to help explain why. republicans currently hold 47 out of 100 senate seats. to win outright control of the senate, republicans must pick up four seats that are currently held by democrats assuming they lose no seats currently held by republicans. now to the map. the most likely place for a gop win is the open democratic seat in nebraska. other states in the tossup column republican strategists say they're hoping to snatch, north dakota, wisconsin, montana, connecticut, virginia and ohio. what makes the gop road to the senate majority even tougher
